Curriculum Resources

The websites listed are places you can research different approaches to educating your homeschooler. There are many philosophies and this is by no means a complete list but it will help you get started on your homeschool journey.

Charlotte Mason Method

The Charlotte Mason Method emphasizes using "living books", dictation, narration and exploration to educate children. Textbooks are rarely used. Information is learned through reading "whole books" including biographies and historical novels to learn important facts instead of just rote memorization.

Charlotte Mason believed academics should be completed in the morning and afternoons should be left free for children to play and explore on their own. She also emphasized a Christian Worldview in learning. There are many modern educators who favor the Charlotte Mason Method including Ruth Beechick, Susan Schaeffer Macaulay and Karen Andreola.

Classical Method

The Classical method of education is an approach to education that dates back to the Middle Ages. It was introduced to modern educators by Dorothy Sayer in 1947 when she presented a paper "The Lost Tools of Learning" that suggested "The Trivium" was a better way to teach pupils how to think.

The Trivium includes three stages of study. The first is the Grammar stage which includes learning the fundamentals of each subject including the study of a language. Memorization, observation and listening skills are perfected during this stage which is taught from K-5th grade.

The Dialectic or Logic stage teaches pupils how to logically debate and draw conclusions through their studies. This stage is typically taught during the middle school years.

The last stage is the Rhetoric Stage. which is taught during the highschool years. Students are taught how to apply and express their conclusions in both writing and oral communication.

Unit Study Method

The Unit Study Method is a great way to teach multiple ages. It uses different topics to incorporate all the major subjects for learning and can be adapted for different ages and abilities easily.

Unit Study is just an extensive study of one topic that encompasses all or most subjects. It can be a topic that is child-led or parent-directed. A Unit Study can last a few days or a few months. For more information on how to approach Unit Studies, see some of our favorite websites.

Traditional Approach

This method uses traditional textbooks.

Unschooling

A philosophy of homeschool education that supposes that learning occurs naturally when students are given the freedom to study their own interests through resources facilitated by their parents. According to The Old Schoolhouse Magazine's Spring 2006 issue, "Unschooling is now known by many different names and crosses a broad spectrum of styles. Organic learning, natural learning, real life learning, delight directed, relaxed, and child-led learning are just some of the phrases that you'll hear in conjuntion with unschooling."

Major proponents of the unschooling method include John Holt, author of Growing Without Schooling and Dr. Raymond and Dorothy Moore of The Moore Foundation.
